Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is the first park most northern circuit itineraries reach, and in the dry season it is arguably the most productive. The Tarangire River runs through it and holds water when the surrounding country has none, which pulls in wildlife from a far wider area — elephant herds in particular gather here in numbers that exceed anywhere else on the circuit. The landscape is distinctive: enormous baobabs standing over open woodland, termite mounds, and seasonal swamps in the south. It is also quieter than the Serengeti and the Crater, and the light through the baobabs in late afternoon is among the best photography on any northern circuit itinerary.

Why visit Tarangire

• The largest dry-season elephant concentrations on the northern circuit, drawn to the permanent river.
• Ancient baobabs that give the park a landscape unlike anywhere else in Tanzania.
• Noticeably fewer vehicles than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater.
• Dry-country species — fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk — that the rest of the circuit lacks.

Wildlife

Elephant above all, in herds that can number several hundred in the dry months. Lion are common and sometimes rest in trees, as at Lake Manyara. Leopard, cheetah and African wild dog occur but are seen far less often. Buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala and waterbuck are widespread, and the park has an exceptional bird list exceeding 500 species.

Best time to visit

June to October is markedly the best period, when the surrounding country dries out and everything concentrates on the river. In the green season much of the wildlife disperses outside the park boundary and game viewing is far less reliable.

How long to stay

One night with a full afternoon and morning drive suits most circuits. Two nights is genuinely rewarding in the dry season, when the river concentrations are at their peak.
